We have been working on jewelry making in 5th grade for several weeks now and I am blown away by their creativity. They love this project and I don't blame them. I have always enjoyed working with my hands. The feeling you get when creating something functional is like nothing else. Enjoy the pictures!

For this project I wanted to focus on three things.
1. I wanted students to learn to work collaboratively towards a common goal 2. I wanted students to learn what a sculpture was 3. I wanted students to learn that art is meant to be shared. Students were either assigned a partner or partnered with a friend. They were challenged to work together to create a sculpture of a tree. When completed they selected a CCSD employee in this school to give their tree to. I called them Cheering trees. They are meant to spread a little springtime cheer. Ask your student about them and they will share with you who they selected and what they learned. #kindnessmatters This is my first time teaching this lesson. I wanted my students to ease into drawing so we looked at some Optical Illusion art. The kids LOVED the work of Vasarely. We talked about how repeated pattern, color, and line created a sense of movement and/or 3-D in the work. Then we set about investigating how to use a ruler with accuracy to create our grid. It was fantastic seeing the students’ amazement when their lines created the Op art. We then used complementary colors to color them. Great work!
