5th grade talked about what a composition in art is. We compared it to compositions in music and in writing. A composition has a main idea, supporting detail, and it flows together nicely combining all the necessary elements. Students were told their composition needed to feature a pumpkin as their main idea, the rest of the details were up to them to create from their imagination, and the pumpkin itself needed to be collaged and contain highlights on the raised part of the pumpkin. Check out the pictures below! These are coming together better than I ever expected! Such creativity!

Last friday all eight fifth grade classes made their way to the art room throughout the day. We talked about positive and negative space earlier in the week to prepare for this day. Then using chalk, water, and paper, we created positive and negative space in a really cool way. Check out all the pictures! 4th grade has finished their first step in their project for our Original Works fundraiser project! We talked about animals that are living under the sea. We then talked about positive and negative space and analogous colors. We discussed how to fill the space on our page. Students' selected their underwater animal and drew it with black glue. Then they added some lines in the negative space to break it up. The next step is for them to add any 3 analogous colors to their animals. Great work 4th grade! Keep an eye out for the fundraiser packets in about a month!
First grade began the day by watching the reading of the story "Don't let the pigeon drive the bus", you can find the you tube link here. After watching the video, we talked about the characters in the story and the plot. We discussed what happened throughout the story, how the pigeon probably felt, and what happened at the end. We all felt bad for the pigeon; so we decided to throw him a party to cheer him up and show him that he is still loved! Wow these kids knocked these marvelous paintings out in ONE day! FABULOUS! We drew with india ink, painted with watercolors, and drew with crayons...wheh! We talked about colors, lines, and shapes. Finally we talked about how to FILL the SPACE of our paper. What a day and what a fabulous lesson! If you want, here is the lesson plan! Wow this was an incredible one day project! I drew a square on laminated white computer paper then rolled printmaking ink in the box. I showed the students how to draw with Qtips then how to print. Needless to say they were blown away and excited to start. We talked about a single interesting image and how to fill up the rest of the space of their work. I really enjoyed this project, its simplicity yet creativity really gave each and every student a chance to shine. Job well done Kindergarten!
